What are the best months to hike in the Tatra Mountains?
Each month is great to hike Tatras but for each period you need to be prepared differently!
In winter and early spring, where there is a lot of snow in the mountains you need a lot of experience in hiking in such conditions. It is icy, slippery and you need to have knowledge about avalanche risk.
Summer has the longest days which is very convenient for long tours. Remember that the sun in mountains is much stronger than in lower parts. Also July and August are the most rainy and stormy months in Tatras.
Autumn is very colorful and the weather is usually much more steady than in summer. Although days are already shorter and it gets colder.
In Polish Tatras the trails and mountain huts/lodges are open all year round.
How do I get from Kraków to Zakopane?
There is an easy and frequent bus transport from Krakow to Zakopane. You can book tickets with FlixBus company or smaller local companies like Szwagropol, Majer Bus or Max Bus.
There is also the possibility to take a train which is less frequent. In high season when there can be long traffic on the road, a train can be a very convenient option.
Is there a local transport around Zakopane town?
Zakopane has few town bus lines. They go approximately once per hour and they are rather reliable with the time schedule.
Most popular destinations: Morskie Oko Lake, Kuźnice or Kościeliska Valley are also served by private, local buses. In the high season they are very frequent, every 15-20 min starting at 6am till 7-8pm. In the off season we can expect them going every 30-40 min from 7am till 4pm.
All the buses that go around and outside of Zakopane leave from the town’s bus station (Chramcówki 35 street).
City buses have dedicated bus stops with a time schedule.
What should I pack for a hike in the Tatra Mountains?
Essential items include hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing, a map or GPS, water, snacks, a first aid kit, and a rain jacket. It’s also advisable to carry a hat and sunscreen for sun protection. Read more in our guide.
What wildlife might I encounter while hiking in the Tatra Mountains?
Hikers may encounter a variety of wildlife. Tatra Mountains is home for many species, also those very rare. You may see brown bears, foxes, deer, marmots, mountain goats, plenty of birds and many more.
It’s important to observe wildlife from a distance and not to feed them or disturb them.
Can I camp in the Tatra Mountains?
Camping is not allowed in the Tatra National Park to protect the environment, wildlife and ensure safety. However there are mountain huts and lodges where you can book a room or a bed for night and have a breakfast, lunch and dinner over there.
What is the parking situation in Zakopane?
In the high season Zakopane can be crowded and you can expect traffic on the way to or out of the town and inside the town. If you choose to travel with your own transport you may rather leave the car at the hotel parking and explore Zakopane with local buses or by walking.
Parking space in Zakopane is usually full during the day.
If you plan to visit Morskie Oko Lake and drive to Palenica Białczańska parking spot with your own car you need to make an online reservation.
